Candace Parker is back from maternity leave and ready to give the Sparks the boost they need

When Lisa Leslie sprained her knee last month, the L.A. Sparks’ season was looking anything but bright.

The team was already missing Candace Parker because of her maternity leave but to have Leslie out too greatly diminished a team who, under normal circumstances, has not one but two women who have held MVP titles.

But soon, they may be back full force. No one expected Parker to be back so fast after giving birth on May 13, but she was on the court shooting and practicing drills last Wednesday.

"It was great," she said. "I was just really excited to practice so I treated it like a game almost because you miss it. I've been away from basketball for nine months, 10 months really, so it's great to be back on the court.”

However, when exactly she will be ready to compete is up in the air.

"We're going to play it by ear," Parker said. "I'd like to have a couple days of practice and then I'll probably have a better idea."

Leslie is also looking forward to a speedy return.

"It's already better," Leslie told the LA Times. "The doctor said, 'You're much further ahead.' "

So now, with the impending return of their two stars, you can look for the Sparks to be a legitimate contender for the WNBA championship title.

If all goes well, Los Angeles could be the basketball city to beat in both genders.
