NFC East Week 3 Preview: Giants continue to win, Cowboys look to bounce back, and Eagles defense looks shakySubmitted by admin on September 25, 2009 - 2:55pm |
Coming off a strong Week 2, the New York Giants have emerged as the favorite not only in the NFC East or even the NFC, but possibly in the entire NFL.
The Giants were able to crash the party at the first regular season game played at the new Cowboys Stadium as they beat Dallas 33-31. The game ended with a field goal from New York after a perfectly orchestrated drive by Eli Manning. Manning really showed in this game why he was deserving of the massive contract he signed recently. Not only did he put up impressive numbers with 330 yards passing and two TDs, but he was able to drive his team down the field reminiscent of his brother Peyton Manning.
Even better news for the Giants is that they finally found a few receivers to step up. Steve Smith was long expected to be the wideout for New York that would step into the No. 1 role and he had a great performance with 134 yards receiving and a TD. More impressive though was Mario Manningham who stepped up as Manning’s go-to guy. Manning hit Manningham 10 times to rack up 150 yards and a TD.
Meanwhile on the other side, Dallas displayed a great rushing attack but Tony Romo displayed why he still has many skeptics. Romo finished the game with a horrid 29.6 passer rating and threw three interceptions in a performance which showed that he still can’t win the big game. I know Dallas fans are hopeful that he can step up and be the franchise quarterback, but owner Jerry Jones may want to re-evaluate if Romo’s really the guy he wants running the show.
Elsewhere in the division, Philadelphia showed that their defensive prowess in Week 1 was a fluke and that without Donavan McNabb they have a tough time winning. The New Orleans’ offense was firing on all cylinders as usual and torched the Philly defense for 48 points. Meanwhile, Philadelphia back-up quarterback Kevin Kolb played a decent game but had three costly interceptions. I was extremely surprised that we didn’t see Jeff Garcia in the game all last week, and even though Kolb has been named the starter for this weekend I would be even more shocked if Garcia doesn’t see some playing time.
Not too much to say about the Washington Redskins now except for the fact that they’re not that good. They squeaked out a two-point victory over a terrible St. Louis Rams team who kept the Redskins out of the end zone for the entire game. Jason Campbell wasn’t necessarily bad in this game but if Washington wants to compete they’ll have to vamp up their Red Zone offense.
Alright, now on to picks for Week 3.
Could this be the week that Detroit finally gets a win? Washington’s favored in this game but I wouldn’t be surprised if Detroit snaps their 19-game losing streak. The Redskins’ defense is solid but their offense was disappointing last week. I’m calling the upset pick; the Lions have to win at some point. Detroit 17, Washington 13.
The Giants have been firing on all cylinders and Tampa Bay has been nothing short of awful. This should be an easy game for Manning and the New York Football Giants. New York 30, Tampa Bay 16.
The long-awaited debut of Michael Vick is finally here but the question is how much will he play? He may see more reps with Donovan McNabb out, but the Eagles still have veteran Jeff Garcia on their roster. In Week 3 they face the Kansas City Chiefs, and possibly Matt Cassel. Despite their defensive no-show last week I still think this squad has talent. The Eagles should have an easy time in this one playing at home. Philadelphia 31, Kansas City 14.
The Monday Night Football matchup pits Tony Romo and the Cowboys against Jake Delhomme and the Carolina Panthers. Despite his performance last week, Romo has shown in the past that he can turn it on against bad teams. And until Delhomme shows me otherwise I think he’s starting his demise and is going to be out soon as the starter in Carolina. Easy game for the ‘Boys at home. Dallas 27, Carolina 17.
