NFC East Week 2 Preview: New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys highlights division

Week 1 is in the books and if there’s one message to take away from the NFC East, it’s that the quarterbacks are pretty damn good.

Starting with Dallas, Tony Romo looked as good as ever despite losing his No. 1 wideout from last year in Terrell Owens. Romo had an absolute field day against the Tampa Bay defense and chalked up three touchdowns and a career-high 353 yards passing, ending the game with a near perfect passer rating of 140.6.

Meanwhile in the Meadowlands two division rivals squared off in Washington and New York. Despite all the talk of the Giants’ Eli Manning not having a standout wide receiver to throw to, he still managed to obtain a passer rating of 93.5 after throwing for 256 yards and a touchdown. On the other side of the ball, Jason Campbell did his part to help silence the critics after connecting on 73 percent of his passes for 211 yards and a touchdown.

For the Philadelphia Eagles, Donovan McNabb was solid throwing for two touchdowns and adding one on the ground, but he put a scare into Philly nation after leaving the game with a rib injury. While his status is uncertain for this Sunday’s game against New Orleans, the team went out and signed four-time Pro Bowler Jeff Garcia to help fill the void. And though Michael Vick looked shaky at best in the preseason, expect him to make an impact once he is allowed to play in Week 3.

So with the offenses firing on all cylinders, the question of who is the favorite to win the division has to come down to the defenses. It’s a fight right now between Philadelphia and New York for who has the better D, but it will become much clearer after Week 2. The Eagles have to face one of the best aerial attacks in the game as they take on Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints just a week after Brees threw for six touchdowns. Meanwhile the Giants have to travel to Dallas to take on Romo and the ‘Boys.

At this point in the season I’ll give the defensive edge to Philadelphia after they put up a great performance against the Carolina Panthers, racking up an absurd five interceptions and recovering another two fumbles. That being said, I wouldn’t sleep on New York’s defense as they showed the ability to use their front four to get pressure on the quarterback.

So now it’s time to make picks for Week 2. After a good showing against the Giants, the Redskins get a cupcake game against St. Louis. Washington takes this one easy. Redskins 27, Rams 10.

The Philadelphia vs. New Orleans game showcases a match-up of high-powered offense vs. high-powered defense. Even with McNabb doubtful for the game, I still like the Eagles in this one because the veteran Garcia still looks like he’s got it. Eagles 35, Saints 28.

And time for the game of the week in the division as rivals New York and Dallas go at it in new Cowboy Stadium. I look for the front seven of the Giants to pressure Romo into making throws he doesn’t want to make, thus forcing the Cowboys into running the ball more than they want to. Dallas has a good ground game, but not if the air attack isn’t working. New York’s defense makes a statement this game and comes away with a win. Giants 30, Cowboys 20.
