When the Philadelphia Eagles cut veteran quarterback Jeff Garcia, it was a sign that the organization was expecting franchise quarterback Donovan McNabb to be back and maybe outsiders did not anticipate it to be this soon.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, on Monday, McNabb and running back Brian Westbrook returned to practice after missing time and games due to different injuries.
With Westbrook missing last week’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs, due to a sprained ankle, and so far starting the season on a low note, the Eagles relied on LeSean McCoy to fill those huge Westbrook shoes as McCoy scored a touchdown and rushed for 85 yards as well.
Luckily for the 2-1 Eagles, the team had a bye week this weekend, which allowed Westbrook some more rest and McNabb only missed two games due to a fractured rib he sustained in the season opener against the Carolina Panthers.
McNabb was injured by Panthers defensive tackle Damione Lewis who landed on the quarterback after the play was dead and McNabb had scored a touchdown for Philadelphia.
With the 0-4 Tampa Bay Buccaneers visiting the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field, it should be a good opportunity for head coach Andy Reid to test McNabb and see if he is back, ready to play and can absorb the contact from the Buccaneers defense. If not coach Reid can go with backup quarterback Kevin Kolb who has steadied the ship in McNabb’s absence.
Though Kolb ran the offense in the Eagles’ loss to the New Orleans Saints, he rebounded the following week, along with Michael Vick, leading Philadelphia to a win over a disappointing Kansas City team.
With the team off on Tuesday, the media will get a crack at Reid, McNabb and Westbrook to figure out what the status is heading into the game on Sunday.
