Derrick Mason's agent, C. Lamont Smith, releases statement regarding retirement

“On Friday July 10, I received a call from my client Derrick Mason and he advised me that after careful and deep thought, he had made a decision to retire from professional football," explained Derrick Mason's career long agent, C. Lamont Smith.

"He indicated that he did not want me to continue to seek a contract extension from the Baltimore Ravens and that his decision had little if anything to do with Baltimore’s refusal to grant him an extension."

"He stated that emotionally and physically he did not feel up to the enormous demands that professional football requires to compete at the level that he is accustomed to competing. He asked me to delay the announcement of this decision out of respect for his former teammate Steve McNair, so this was obviously complied with at his request."

"After speaking with Derrick, I telephoned Ozzie Newsome, the Ravens’ general manager and advised him of Derrick’s decision. Given that Derrick just reached this decision on Friday, he has not as of yet filed official papers with the league offices. I expect that he will do this when he gets around to it."

"Derrick has indicated that he does not wish to do interviews at this time and respectfully requests that the media refrain from making such requests of him for the next two weeks.”

mason

turd move!!!!! if he didnt want more money then why was he all over the nfl network spouting off about why he deserved more money, not like he wasn't making good money already. nice move mason, leave your team mates less then 2 weeks before camp. your such a fraud....

We're going to really miss

We're going to really miss Mason. I hope this doesn't get dragged out for too long waiting on "if" he actually files the paperwork. This is like Brett Favre only Mason is actually good. I trust him that this isn't a ploy for money but can't believe he's actually done. There's usually still this fire that athletes have to go out and show the world just how good you are. He's continuing to make a name for himself and instead of being the most underrated player he's getting recognition which is well deserved. Fans love him and know how much he means to the team. I wouldn't be surprised to see him change his mind, come back and have a Pro Bowl year with Flacco.

Mason is an honest man and I

Mason is an honest man and I doubt this is a ploy for money. If he says he's going to retire, I believe him. It no secret that the Ravens are closing in on the cap and with the Suggs deal still requiring closure, an additional Mason contract extension seemed improbable anyway.

I do have an issue with his timing. If he had doubts about this season and was considering retirement in January, why wouldn't he relay this musing to the Ravens then so they could pick up a veteran wide receiver when they had the chance? Maybe then was the time for gaming for dough, but this close to training camp he has really left the Ravens offense between a rock and a hard place. The best hope now is for a healthy Demetrius Williams... and I'm not holding my breath on that one.

Derrick Mason

I think you throw a big four or five year contract worth 22 million up and watch how much more energized he is to play!!!He does deserve that much from us .I love Derrick and what he has done for the team is awsome he is a RAVEN with no question. It would be a huge mistake for him to retire this young in his NFL career.I just hope if he goes threw with this it's for all the right reasons, not because of Steve's passing I as a RAVENS fan have had Steve's jersey out on the back of my computer chair since the news flash!!And my bestfriend passed suddenly two years ago and it is alot to deal with he also had a child that I try to be there for as much as I can.But I to have alot on my plate with my life and my own children.I just would really like Derrick to chill and get these things resolved in his mind before making a hasty move that he will most likely regret in a year or two when it's to late to go back!!!I hope Derrick reads this because if one thing I WOULD LIKE HIM TO READ is you mean so much to our team, city and players and at least play one more for our fallen brother Steve(THE AIR)McNAIR!!!!We love you Derrick hope to see you on the the field next season bro!!

I think everyone knows this

I think everyone knows this deep down is a ploy for more money. He complained about his contract earlier in the offseason. So he waits until after the draft, practicing with the team earlier in the day and then just before training camp with the team expecting him to be there to make this decision. He won't even file the paperwork "until he gets around to it". WTF is that? If he's going to retire then just do it! The team can use this time to find a replacement. But instead it sounds like this agent is going to have him drag his feet.

People are quick to call this

People are quick to call this a ploy simply because they feel mason can play more years, what if he doesn't want to. If you wants to be done he can be. maybe McNair's death did play a factor in this, if so, so what. If he wants to be with his family he should be. Mason has been an excellent professional his entire career. He can announce his retirement in whatever way he wants. People should support his decision and respect and appreciate what he brought to the Ravens' organization.

mason retirement

i think if the man wants to retire let him be! did anyone say it was bush league when management didnt want to extend his contract? was it bush league when he played with a torn up shoulder? there are things bigger than football people.... also he doesnt have to fill out retirement papers right away. This man came to baltimore and did his job and didnt say a word. and how do you know he was at facility working out, just because he was there doesnt mean he was working out. just enjoy what he did for this city and team............

MASON RETIREMENT

He came to Baltimore and got paid for what he did. Plus we were the best team asking for him too. The team does not have to extend when you are under a contract. I did enjoy it but to pull a move like this is a bush league move and I lost all respect for him. Regular people lose freinds and family all the time and can't and don't retire. So save me this crap

How many of those regular

How many of those regular people play football and have gone through 12 grueling NFL seasons. You are dumb for even trying to make that comparison. Ravens fans are dumb and the team can quit on the player any time they want and without any type of warning. Now it is wrong if the player does it, just like it is wrong for the player to want to get paid. The team is in it to make money and they operate as a business. You are stupid BILL.

Derrick Mason's retirement

What kind of circus operation are you running their, Lamont? This is bush league. First, you have a client who just one day before he tells you he's retiring, had to deal with his best friends funeral and you accept his retirement just like that? Then today, he was at the Raven's training facilities working out!!! Didn't mention his retirement to anyone, not even to his closest friends on the team. Didn't tell Ozzie, Harbaugh or anyone else in management. Then, you post his retirement. Talk about classless. I don't know what kind of games you're playing but you're a clown and Mason is a clown for going along with this ploy. Now, you're saying Mason will file the papers when he gets around to it. Why aren't you working up the papers??? You are his agent. All Mason should have to do is sign on the dotted line. What kind of joke operation are you running?
